米シリコンバレーの著名なIT雑誌「Red Herring」11月13日号で、イー・モバイルの携帯電話事業へのチャレンジについて巻頭特集「Mobile Samurai」が組まれました。

12年ぶりの新規参入が日本の携帯電話市場にどのような変革をもたらすのか、米国でも注目が高まっています。

photoSerial entrepreneur Sachio Semmoto has spent the last 22 years roiling the Japanese telecommunications sector. And he is about to do it again. After years of founding successful telecom and broadband companies, Mr. Semmoto is on to his next project: building eMobile, a new mobile phone company, from scratch. "I see a tremendous opportunity in mobile," says Mr. Semmoto, who is out to do in the cellular sector what he has already done in fixed-line voice and broadband access. "I am going to need lots of guts and lots of luck, but I am confident," he says. Gartner analyst Nahoko Mitsuyama says if eMobile can offer attractive prices, terminals, and network speeds, the company has a reasonable shot. But the Fulbright Scholar has a tough road ahead. Japan's $75-billion mobile phone market is dominated by three companies?NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, and Softbank. eMobile will likely face difficulties building up brand recognition with the public, among other challenges.
